A troubled Colorado teen was killed in a bizarre and horrific accident early Saturday when she jumped from her mother’s moving car and was hit by another speeding vehicle, police said.
State police told the Denver Post that Catrina Fox, 17, was riding home to Bailey, Colo., from Denver at around 1 a.m. when she kicked open the door of her mom’s sedan and leapt onto U.S. 285 in Jefferson County.
Fox was struck by a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser being driven by a 17-year-old boy, the Post reported. She was killed instantly.
“I’ve never seen anything like that. She just got hit at full speed. It was horrific,” witness Dean Krakel, a photo editor at the Denver Post who was driving home from work when the accident happened, told the newspaper. (pic of Catrina on right)
Krakel said that Fox’s mother passed out from shock after the accident, and the people ran over the teen were “wailing” with grief.
Fox’s friend, Kayla Lucero, 18, said the victim was “dealing with a lot of demons” and “went over the edge.”
“She had a breakdown,” Lucero told the Post.
Fox’s Facebook wall was flooded with condolence messages on Saturday and Sunday.
“You could always make people laugh and your smile was contagious,” one mourner wrote. “Sleep with the angels baby girl. You were to [sic\] young to be taken from us.”
