Five Orthodox Jewish men — four of them rabbis — were indicted by a federal grand jury in New Jersey Thursday on charges of conspiring to kidnap Jewish men and force them to grant their wives religious divorces, known as “gets.”
Rabbis Mendel Epstein, Martin Wolmark, Jay Goldstein and Binyamin Stimler had previously been charged, along with others, with conspiracy to commit kidnapping in a 2013 complaint.
Epstein’s son, David Epstein, was the fifth man named in the conspiracy indictment.
Four of the others charged, including Jay Goldstein’s sons, Avrohom Goldstein, 34, and Moshe Goldstein, 31, both of Brooklyn, have since pleaded guilty to extortion charges in connection with the case, authorities said.
The maximum sentence for a conspiracy kidnapping charge is life in prison.
